Check Safety Ratings Before Car Purchase

You probably have a list of things you want to check before buying a car such as price, features, color, and mileage. One thing you definitely want to look at is the safety ratings.

Both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conduct several tests and use the results to rate the safety performance of each car. The NHTSA tests a vehicle for frontal and side collision performance and uses an algorithm to determine the likelihood of injury from a rollover. Once results are determined, this government agency assigns a star rating. The IIHS conducts frontal, side and top impact tests and assigns performance levels to each vehicle such as Poor, Marginal, Acceptable and Good. Top cars in terms of safety receive the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ award.
